(AP) ? Even in death, Hugo Chavez's orders are being followed. The man he anointed to succeed him, Vice President Nicolas Maduro, will continue to run Venezuela as interim president and be the governing socialists' candidate in an election to be called within 30 days.

Foreign Minister Elias Jaua confirmed that Tuesday, just hours after Maduro, tears running down his face, announced the death of Chavez, the larger-than-life former paratroop officer who had presided over Venezuela as virtually a one-man show for more than 14 years.

It was not immediately clear when the presidential vote would be held.

Considerable funereal pageantry was expected to honor Chavez, the political impresario widely adored among Venezuela's poor for putting the oil-rich state in their service.

Seven days of mourning were declared, all school was suspended for the week and friendly heads of state were expected in this economically challenged and violence-afflicted nation for an elaborate funeral Friday. No date or place were announced for Chavez's burial.

Venezuela's constitution specifies that the speaker of the National Assembly, currently Diosdado Cabello, should assume the interim presidency if a president can't be sworn in.

But the officials left in charge by Chavez before he went to Cuba in December for his fourth cancer surgery in a little less than two years have not been especially assiduous about heeding the constitution, and human rights and free speech activists are concerned they will continue to flaunt the rule of law.

Some in anguish, some in fear, Venezuelans raced for home and stocked up on food and water after the government announced Chavez's death, declining to say what exactly killed him. On Monday night, the government had said the president had been weakened by a severe, new respiratory infection.

Tuesday was a day fraught with mixed signals, some foreboding. Just a few hours before announcing Chavez's death, Maduro virulently accused enemies, domestic and foreign and clearly including the United States, of trying to undermine Venezuelan democracy. The government said two U.S. military attaches had been expelled for allegedly trying to destabilize the nation.

But in announcing that the president was dead, Maduro shifted tone, calling on Venezuelans to be "dignified heirs of the giant man."

"Let there be no weakness, no violence. Let there be no hate. In our hearts there should only be one sentiment: Love. Love, peace and discipline."

Opposition leader Henrique Capriles, who lost to Chavez in the October presidential election and is widely expected to be the opposition's candidate to oppose Maduro, was conciliatory in a televised address.

"This is not the moment to highlight what separates us," Capriles said. "This is not the hour for differences; it is the hour for union, it is the hour for peace."

Capriles, the youthful governor of Miranda state, has been bitterly feuding with Maduro and other Chavez loyalists who accused him of conspiring with far-right U.S. forces to undermine the revolution.

Across downtown Caracas, shops and restaurants begin closing and Venezuelans hustled for home, some even breaking into a run. Many looked anguished and incredulous.

"I feel a sorrow so big I can't speak," said Yamilina Barrios, a 39-year-old clerk who works in the Industry Ministry, her face covered in tears. "He was the best this country had."

Others wished Chavez's departure had come through the ballot box.

Carlos Quijada, a 38-year-old economist, said that "now there is a lot of uncertainty about what will happen."

He said a peaceful transition depends on the government. "If it behaves democratically we should not have many problems," Quijada said.

Like most Venezuelans, he said his big concern is ending violent crime that afflicts all strata of society, from the poor who Chavez wooed with state largesse to the economic elite at the core of the political opposition.

Venezuela has the world's second-highest murder rate after Honduras ? 56 people for every 100,000 according to government figures, which nongovernmental groups say are understated.

Late Tuesday, the armed forces chief, Gen. Wilmer Barrientos, reported "complete calm" in the country.

But there had been several incidents of political violence.

In one, a group of masked, helmeted men on motorcycles, some brandishing revolvers, attacked about 40 students who had been protesting for more than a week near the Supreme Court building to demand the government give more information about Chavez's health.

The attackers, who didn't wear clothing identifying any political allegiance, burned the students' tents and scattered their food just minutes after Chavez's death was announced.

"They burned everything we had," said student leader Gaby Arellano. She said she saw four of the attackers with pistols but none fired a shot.

Outside the military hospital where Chavez's body was visited by loved ones and allies, an angry crowd attacked a Colombian TV reporter.

"They beat us with helmets, with sticks, men, women, adults," Carmen Andrea Rengifo said on RCN TV. Video images showed her bleeding above the forehead but she was not seriously injured.

Maduro and other government officials have recently railed against international media for allegedly reporting rumors about Chavez's health, although RCN wasn't one of those criticized.

After nightfall, several hundred people gathered at Bolivar Square, a symbolic place for Chavistas because it has a huge nine-meter-tall (30-foot-tall) statue of Simon Bolivar, the 19th century independence hero whom Chavez claimed as his chief inspiration.

Some arrived singing Venezuela's national anthem and holding up posters of Chavez.

One man began shouting through a megaphone a warning to the opposition: "They won't return." The crowd then joined in, chanting: "They won't return."

Chavez leaves behind a political movement firmly in control of a nation that human rights activist Liliana Ortega, director of the non-governmental group COFAVIC, describes as a badly deteriorated state where institutions such as the police, courts and prosecutor's offices have been converted into tools of political persecution and where most media are firmly controlled by the government.

Maduro, whose government role had grown after Chavez went to Cuba for treatment, was belligerent early Tuesday. He reported the expulsion of one of the two U.S. attaches, and also said that "we have no doubt" that Chavez's cancer, first diagnosed in June 2011, was induced by "the historical enemies of our homeland."

Maduro compared the situation to the death of the Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat, claiming Arafat was "inoculated with an illness" and said a "scientific commission will prove that Comandante Chavez was attacked with this illness."

Chavez's inner circle has long claimed the United States was behind a failed 2002 attempt to overthrow him, and he has frequently played the anti-American card to stir up support. Venezuela has been without a U.S. ambassador since July 2010 and expelled another U.S. military officer in 2006.

U.S. State Department spokesman Patrick Ventrell rejected the assertion that the U.S. was trying to destabilize Venezuela. The claim, he said, "leads us to conclude that, unfortunately, the current Venezuelan government is not interested in an improved relationship."

Ventrell added that the assertion that Washington somehow had a hand in Chavez's illness was "absurd."

He hinted the U.S. could reciprocate with expulsions of Venezuelan diplomats.

Chavez rose to fame by launching a failed 1992 coup, but never groomed a successor and many Venezuelans find Maduro, a former union agitator and Chavez's intellectual inferior by bounds, lacking the political heft.

Some political analysts believe that has made him more inclined to go on the attack as the presidential campaign begins in earnest.

Javier Corrales, an Amherst College political scientist, said he was concerned about the "virulent, anti-American discourse" under Maduro. "It seems to me this is a government that is beginning to blame the United States for all its troubles."

"This is very dark," he said. "This is the most nebulous period, the most menacing that the government has been, and the actions have been pretty severe."

Those actions have included hauling into court last week a leading opposition politician, Leopoldo Lopez, to face charges of influence peddling in a 15-year-old case that his lawyers say has passed the statute of limitations.

Lopez, who calls the charges ludicrous, ran logistics for Capriles in the Oct. 7 election after the government barred him from running for office.

In the absence of Chavez, the government is more aggressively seeking "to selectively destroy" opposition activists, Lopez said.

In his case, Lopez expects to be burdened by considerable legal distractions as he helps try to dislodge the Chavistas from power.

Top 10 Worst Processed Food You Should Never Eat | Body Health ...

Fries

The popularity of processed food is going up. The main reason is that it?s convenient and affordable. However, with all the sugar, salt, preservatives and fat, processed food are not something you want to eat if you want to be healthy. Even though the temptation is strong and many times it?s much simpler to eat them than go for a healthy alternative, you should try to avoid them. What kinds of processed food are the worst? Here?s the top 10:

Chicken Nuggets ? They are readily available, mouthwatering and tasty. However, they are bad for you. You would rather consume grilled skinless chicken breast or chicken strips if you want to eat chicken meat. Whether you buy them from your local restaurant or out of your freezer, chicken nuggets are high in preservatives, fat and salt and has no benefit for your body.

French Fries ? Very few realize the amount of calories contained even in the smallest serving of French fries. Besides high calories, it offers very little nutritional value for your body. Eating french fries are linked to obesity and raised blood sugar level.

jalapeno-lime-potato-chips

White rice ? Oh yeah! White rice. You thought it was healthy did not you? Not many people know that it is a processed food. Plus a lot of people prefer white rice because it is easy to cook and relatively cheap, but just like other processed foods white rice offers you little nutrition. If you want to remain healthy consider buying wild or brown rice though it is more expensive and takes longer to cook.

Potato chips ? People love to eat potato chips as a regular snack not knowing that they are undermining their health. Potato chips are rich in preservatives, salt and calories and provide little or no nutritional value.

Soda - Drinking a lot of soda even the sugar free ones is unhealthy. Do not get fooled by marketing and do not consume even diet soda. It might have 0 calories, but artificial sweetener is even worse than regular sugar. Yes, it?s okay to have a glass once in a while, but do not drink sodas daily if you care about your health.

Processed meat -Processed meat does not contain sugar, but they are loaded with preservatives that you don?t want to put in your body. Instead of eating processed meat you can go for the organic. It can be more expensive, but the hospital bills can be much higher later in your life.

Cereal

Sugary cereals ? A lot of households use cereals for breakfast, most of these cereals are rich in added sugars and contain preservatives and lack dietary fiber. When purchasing your breakfast cereals go for those that contain less sugar and provides lots of fiber.

Blended Coffee ? Most of the blended coffees from your local coffee shop without the added cream contains approximately 300 calories. If you want to remain healthy avoid blended coffee drinks. Black coffee on the other hand contains 5 calories. So, if you love to start a day with a cup of coffee, make sure you go for a black one.

Hot dogs ? Everyone loves them, but they aren?t good for your health as they are rich in saturated fat. If you must eat hot dogs try the veggies dogs. They are healthier.

Margarine ? It is an alternative of butter and lots of people use it. If you want to be healthy, don?t be one of them. Margarine is full of trans fats that is linked to many health related problems.

UIU Android launcher targets non-techie users with easy cloud management (video)

UIU

Emblaze Mobile's First Else may be no more, but its legacy lives on. During MWC we caught up with the company's ex-CEO, Amir Kupervas, who started a company called UIU in June 2011 -- only a month after his departure and almost a year after the tantalizing First Else got canned. Over at UIU, Kupervas and UX strategist Itay Levin (who also took part in the First Else project) have a more humble ambition: to offer an Android launcher and an accompanying cloud management platform that are simple enough for non-techie users. "In the US, smartphones generate twice as much the amount of calls to the customer centers than the featurephones," said Kupervas. "There's a lot of hustle and a lot of confusion on how to work these guys. People are struggling with them, even existing users."

(AP) ? Scrawls of racially offensive graffiti and, more recently, a report of someone wearing what looked like a Ku Klux Klan-type hooded robe on campus have shaken students at historically liberal Oberlin College, one of the nation's first universities to admit blacks.

A day after the school canceled classes and students marched on campus, many remained worried about their safety.

"I just really feel uncomfortable walking alone anywhere," Modjeska Pleasant, 19, a first-year student from Savannah, Ga., said Tuesday.

She said she became upset after hearing a few white students suggest that the racist graffiti first found a month ago and anti-Semitic and racist fliers and other messages left around campus since then were just a prank to get out of classes.

The college canceled Monday's classes after the early morning sighting of the hooded robe. Classes resumed Tuesday.

President Marvin Krislov and three college deans told the campus community in an open letter that they hope the ordeal will lead to a stronger Oberlin. Students and professors gathered Monday afternoon to talk about mutual respect.

Hate-filled graffiti and racially charged displays are hardly unusual on college campuses. But what makes this string of incidents so shocking is that it happened at a place tied so closely with educating and empowering blacks in America.

Oberlin began admitting blacks nearly 180 years ago. Among its graduates are one of the first blacks elected to public office and the first black lawyer allowed to practice in New York state.

The city itself was a stop on the Underground Railroad that aided escaped slaves.

The college, with nearly 3,000 students, remains a liberal oasis in the middle of northern Ohio, surrounded by conservative farming towns and rust belt cities. Cleveland is about 30 miles away.

Isaac Fuhrman, a psychology from Lexington, Mass., said the incidents were upsetting, especially for black students.

"I guess for them, Oberlin doesn't seem like such a safe haven perhaps," said Fuhrman, who is white.

There are no fraternity or sorority houses at Oberlin, and athletics isn't a big part of campus life. Instead, students come to study music, art and creative writing.

Notable recent alumni include Jerry Greenfield of Ben & Jerry's ice cream and Lena Dunham, creator of the HBO series "Girls" ? a show featuring several characters who met at Oberlin.

Dunham wrote on her Twitter account Monday that she was saddened by the hate-filled incidents.

"Hey Obies, remember the beautiful, inclusive and downright revolutionary history of the place you call home. Protect each other," she wrote.

Marine Shaves His Head and Races for Breast Cancer in a Heartwarming Act of Love

marine runs for breast cancerWhen you think of a breast cancer charity effort, we tend to think of a lot of pink ... and crowds of women standing together to show support for one another's battles with the disease. But men are a valiant, integral part of the fight, as well. Case in point:?Sgt. Charles Gallagher, a systems administrator with the 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit and native of St. Cloud, Florida, participated in the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure in Wilmington, North Carolina this past Saturday. He ran in support of his aunt, Kathleen Kennard, who is currently undergoing treatment for breast cancer.?

Sgt. Gallagher told Marines.com: "My aunt is near and dear to me. This race is my way of showing support for the fight she is fighting. And for women in general who are in the same fight.? Good for him!

Gallagher grew so close to his aunt after his dad passed away, and the Marine said, "She was always there for me." Standing by her while she battles breast cancer is one major way he's trying to give back to her. And his efforts haven't been limited to running the Komen race. He said:

Aside from running, I shaved my head when she started to lose her hair as a side effect of chemotherapy.

Plus, get this -- his Marines shaved their heads to show support, as well. BRAVO, guys!

Gallagher is also speaking out on what others can do:

Marines can always donate to the Susan G. Komen foundation and other charities that raise awareness. Marines can participate in runs, give blood, and if possible donate their hair to the Locks of Love foundation. It?s not just Marines though; people in general need to show their support. This is one of the biggest killers of women, and people need to be pro-active, not re-active.

Wow. This is just one amazing example of how people can really step up to the plate for their loved ones who find themselves heading down the scary road of battling cancer. It sounds like Gallagher is doing everything he can possible think of to support his aunt, because ultimately, he just wants her to know that he's there for her. That she's not in this alone. Sounds so simple, but what's incredible is that support like that can do so much more than raise money and awareness -- it can save lives.

How do you feel about Gallagher's story? Have you ever done something similar for a loved one -- or had it done for you?

PHILADELPHIA --?A young boy who was the victim of bullying has died, according to his family. Bailey O'Neill, who turned 12 on Saturday, was in a coma after suffering several seizures. His family told NBC10's Katy Zachry that he died at the hospital on Sunday.?

Bailey's family says he was jumped by two classmates during recess at Darby Township School last January and suffered a concussion as well as a broken nose as a result.? He then began to suffer seizures the next day, forcing doctors to put him into a medically induced coma. Joy Fecanin, the boy's grandmother, told NBC10's Katy Zachry that he had to have a blood transfusion after getting pneumonia.

On Sunday, the following message was posted on the Building Hope for Bailey Facebook?Page:

I would like to thank everyone who has prayed and supported Bailey and his family!! Bailey has been the strongest toughest boy I know. He has fought this battle long and hard. There just wasn't a way to fix this. I wish I could say he will get better but I can't. Bailey has gone to be with God today :( I love you Jina Risoldi with all my heart and I will help you through this. Bailey I love you!!! Please keep Baileys family in your prayers!!!

While the students who jumped Bailey were suspended for two days, police have not yet revealed whether they will be criminally charged.

?I would like to see these kids punished,? said Fecanin when she spoke to Zachry last month. ?Something has to be done. I don?t know what?s taking them so long.?

Delaware County District Attorney Jack Whelan says investigators are trying to determine if the injuries Bailey received in the fight caused his seizures. Investigators interviewed kids and recess aides who were on the playground when the fight broke out.

?We can assure them that we are going to continue with our investigation,? said Whelan.

Bailey?s younger brother was taken out of the school because his parents were worried that he'd also be the victim of bullying.?

A leading gaming expert in Ireland is seeking input from Irish emigrants abroad who are employed in the gaming industry, as part of his research for the 2013 Irish Computer Games Industry Report.

Employment in the Irish-based video games industry has increased 91 percent since 2009, according to last years report by Gamedevelopers.ie. In 2009 there were 13 games development teams active in Ireland, last year that figure jumped to 51 teams.

A short ten question survey aims to identify the skills gap that currently exists in the local game development industry in Ireland, which has experienced exponential growth over the last three years.

The survey aims to identify the skills gaps that currently exist in the local game development industry, which has been experiencing rapid growth over the last three years as over fifty local game development teams make and release products at an unprecedented pace.

"There was barely a handful of game developers when a lot of people emigrated prior to the recession? said Jamie McCormick, the author of the report.

"With the growth of Steam, Android and iOS, as well as developments in the browser space, the traditional barriers to market have evaporated, and dozens of teams across the country have begun to develop games and bring them to market. KuTheGame.com is a shining example of this.?

The report is expected to be published in early summer.

Men's Health | Getting ripped happens in the kitchen, so here's what ...

Personal trainer Dan Smullen runs us through what we should be eating to get the most out of our workouts, since the battle is mostly won in the kitchen

By Dan Smullen BSc

You might have heard me mention in one of the JOE Gets Ripped videos that the battle to lose weight is 70% down to your diet. If you're a member at the Fitness Dock gym, and you've ever asked me how to burn belly fat and get a six pack, my answer would have been incredibly simple: ?It happens in the kitchen?!

Physiologists, dieticians or even doctors for years have been led to believe that weight loss occurs only when the amount of energy we consume is at a deficit to the amount of energy we expend. Wait, what does all that mean?

In other words, the theory we are talking about here is that the calories yout take in must be lower than the calories you use up, the famous ?eat less exercise more phenomenon?. Wow wasn?t that a scientific breakthrough! Unfortunately it?s not quite as simple as that in order to burn fatand reshape our bodies in the long run.

The best diet out there does not concern itself with counting calories, cutting out carbs or even making you feel starved, it's a diet we got from our ancetors.

The?Paleo diet?is the healthiest way you can eat because it is the ONLY nutritional approach that works?with your genetics to help you stay lean, strong and energetic.

Research in biology, biochemistry, dermatology and many other disciplines indicate it is our modern diet, full of refined foods, trans fats and sugar, that is at the root of degenerative diseases such as obesity, cancer, diabetes, heart disease, Parkinson?s, Alzheimer?s, depression and infertility.

The Paleo Diet in a nutshell

So what should we be eating? Let's look at it in its most simple terms.

Eat this: Berries, Vegetables, lean meats and eggs, seafood, nuts and seeds, healthy fats

Not that: Dairy, grains, legumes, straches, alcohol, processed foods and sugars

Three reasons why the paleo diet works!

1.Lean proteins

Lean proteins are essential for our muscles, healthy bones and optimal immune function. Protein also helps you to feel satisfied between meals and stop snacking.

2.Fruits and Vegetables

Fruits and vegetables are rich in antioxidants, vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients that have been shown to decrease the likelihood of developing a number of degenerative diseases including cancer, diabetes and neurological decline.

3.Healthy fats from nuts, seeds, avocados, olive oil, fish oil and grass-fed meat

Not only will this way of eating burn belly fat, but scientific research shows that diets rich in Monounsaturated and Omega-3 fats dramatically reduce the likelihood of problems with obesity, cancer, diabetes, heart disease and cognitive decline.

The diet is very simple and can be summed up like this: "If it doesn't swim, run, or fly, or isn't green and grows in the ground, don't eat it!"

The Yeshiva World New Study Says Holocaust Infrastructure Was ...

aushnThe Holocaust ? the systematic, state-sponsored murder, persecution and abuse of millions ? was far more shocking and horrific than even experts thought a few months ago.

New research shows that about 42,500 Nazi camps and ghettos stretched from Nazi-controlled France to Russia between 1933 and 1945, Hitler?s vicious reign of terror and darkness.

The prevalence of camps in Germany, in particular, astonished researcher Martin Dean. Berlin, for instance, had about 3,000 camps and Hamburg had 1,300 sites.

?You literally could not go anywhere in Germany without running into forced labor camps, P.O.W. camps, concentration camps,? said Dean. ?They were everywhere.?

Dean and fellow scholar Geoffrey Megargee presented their findings at the German Historical Institute in Washington in late January, reported The New York Times.

Megargee expected to find about 7,000 camps and ghettos when research began. The final number of 42,500 locations sent shudders throughout the room.

?The numbers are so much higher than what we originally thought,? institute director Hartmut Berghoff told the newspaper. ?We knew before how horrible life in the camps and ghettos was ? but the numbers are unbelievable.?

The research team uncovered 30,000 slave camps, 1,150 Jewish ghettos, 1,000 prisoner-of-war camps, 980 concentration camps, 500 sex-slave brothels and thousands of other camps serving a myriad of wicked ends: forced abortions, mandatory euthanasia of the elderly and ill, ?Germanisation? and transportation hubs to murder sites, according to the Times.

The team started its research in 2000 for a seven-volume encyclopedia published by the Holocaust Museum, who have already released the first two volumes and expect to release all seven by 2025.

2nd Jonah Lehrer book being pulled from shelves

NEW YORK (AP) ? A second Jonah Lehrer book is being pulled.

Houghton Mifflin Harcourt announced Friday that Lehrer's "How We Decide," originally published in 2009, is being taken "off sale." Spokeswoman Lori Glazer said the decision followed an internal review, but she didn't elaborate.

Lehrer's best-selling "Imagine" was withdrawn last year after Tablet Magazine reported that Lehrer had manipulated and fabricated Bob Dylan quotes. At the same time, he resigned as a staff writer for The New Yorker.

Glazer said Friday that the publisher will continue to sell a third Lehrer book, "Proust Was a Neuroscientist," which was released in 2007.

The 31-year-old Lehrer had been a popular author and speaker, specializing in books and essays about how the mind works. But he also has been criticized for sloppy scholarship and faulty reasoning, and he admitted recycling his own journalism for separate publications.

During a recent speech in Miami, he blamed himself for "arrogance" and "carelessness" and expressed hope that he could revive his career.

Workers anxious as cuts set to take effect

(AP) ? They don't care which side caused Washington's latest crisis.

Five hundred miles from Capitol Hill, the men and women of the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard are worrying about paying rent, searching for new jobs and caring for sick loved ones.

Almost the entire workforce, a community of more than 5,000 along the Maine and New Hampshire seacoast, is preparing to lose the equivalent of a month's pay because of Congress' inability to resolve another budget stalemate.

Orsom "Butch" Huntley, 63, a shipyard employee for three decades, is already living paycheck to paycheck while caring for his terminally ill wife.

"Congress doesn't look at the individual. They just look at the bottom line. And it just really makes it tough to think we're just a number to them," Huntley, a computer engineer, said this week in a restaurant outside the shipyard gate. "It's going to be totally devastating."

The fear is consuming military communities as the nation braces for budget cuts designed to be so painful they would compel Congress to find better ways to cut the federal deficit. President Barack Obama and governors from across the nation have intensified calls for compromise in recent days to meet Friday's deadline.

Defense officials warn of diminished military readiness as the cuts begin to bite. Economists warn of damage to a delicate economic recovery. And federal officials warn of travel delays, slashed preschool access and closed national parks.

But in small towns whose economies are deeply tied to the military, there is a human impact that breeds anger and fear.

Across the table from Huntley, facilities engineer Kevin Do explains that he and his wife ? also a shipyard employee ? have already delayed plans to buy their first home because of uncertainty created by Washington. With a 4-year-old son in daycare, he's now looking for part-time construction work to help pay the bills, even if it means working seven days a week.

"We basically put the American dream on hold," Do said.

Preparing for a worst-case scenario, Navy officials have plans to force mandatory furloughs on roughly 186,000 civilian employees across the country. People like Huntley and Do would lose 22 paid days between April and October, or roughly 20 percent of their pay. Shipyards from coast to coast have outlined cost-cutting plans to delay huge maintenance contracts on nuclear submarines and aircraft carriers.

Polling suggests that some Americans are still unaware of the looming cuts, known in Washington speak as a "sequester," but the debate is well known to federal employees and the huge network of businesses, contractors and communities that serve Navy shipyards and military bases. Virtually every nearby restaurant, grocery store or car dealer is aware of the looming cuts.

Some states are facing more pain than others. Oklahoma has five military installations. Chris Spiwak, owner of Chequers Restaurant and Pub outside Tinker Air Force Base in Midwest City, said he's afraid he might have to lay off an employee or two.

"We have customers telling us that if they're furloughed, they won't be coming in as much," Spiwak said. "That's their expendable income. They'll be eating at home or bringing their lunches."

And there is widespread uncertainty in Virginia, where many of the 21,000 workers at Newport News Shipbuilding are bracing for the worst. Obama addressed shipyard workers this week about the dangers of the spending cuts.

"Everybody's nervous, worried about what's going to happen," Ronnie Hall, a 27-year-old fleet support apprentice, said before the president spoke.

The president, who has pushed for a compromise deficit package of spending cuts and new tax revenue, seems to have the upper hand among the public over the standoff. A Pew/USA Today poll this week found 49 percent of Americans would blame Republicans in Congress if Obama and Congress couldn't strike a deal. Thirty-one percent would blame Obama, 11 percent would blame both of them and 8 percent were unsure.

On federal spending in general, an ABC News/Washington Post poll released Wednesday found significantly more Americans in favor of Obama's handling of federal spending than Republicans in Congress, although neither side earned high marks. Half of the country disapproved of Obama's handling of the issue, while two-thirds disapproved of congressional Republicans.

The political stakes meant little to the workers gathered outside the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard this week during their lunch break.

"Both sides put us here," said Huntley, who had already lost his house because of his wife's medical bills. "At my age I should be in my golden years. But those things are gone. As the guys around me say, the golden years have taken the gold and just left me the years."

Next up for Congress and the White House is how to avoid Washington's coming crisis, which threatens a government shutdown after March 27, when a six-month spending bill enacted last year expires.

In Kittery, Do offered elected leaders a reminder: "They forget it's faces and families," he said. "There's a cloud over a lot of people."

(AP) ? For a while, it looked as though a pair of long streaks were in jeopardy.

That is, until LeBron James finally got going ? at the perfect time.

Dwyane Wade scored 22 points and set up James for a critical 3-pointer in the final half-minute, and the Heat extended their winning streak to 13 games by beating the Memphis Grizzlies 98-91 on Friday night.

"I thought this was one of our better wins of the season," Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said. "It was tough. We had to work for everything. We had to find a different way to win, deal with frustration ... and then make some plays down the stretch."

On a night when he shot just 4 for 14, James finished two rebounds shy of a triple-double, with 18 points and 10 assists. Shane Battier scored 14, Chris Bosh added 13 and Ray Allen had 10 for Miami, which snapped Memphis' eight-game winning streak.

"He's the best player in the world," Bosh said. "But we have the best supporting cast."

Down the stretch, James ? who had 14 points, four rebounds and four assists in the fourth quarter alone ? was simply too much. After managing only four points in the first three quarters, James still wound up reaching double digits for the 475th straight regular-season game.

"He made the big shot and that's all that matters," said Memphis' Marc Gasol, who led all scorers with 24.

Gasol tied the game with a pair of free throws with 2:44 left, before the Heat scored the next five. Bosh had a three-point play, and Wade took off in transition for a slam that put Miami up 90-85.

Gasol scored the next four, but Memphis got no closer. James calmly hit a 3-pointer with 24 seconds remaining to seal the win.

"I'm always confident in my next shot," James said. "D-Wade gave me a great pass and I was able to knock it down."

The Grizzlies got 14 points from Zach Randolph, who said he was bothered throughout after turning his left ankle on the game's first possession. Mike Conley added 14 for Memphis, which got 10 from Quincy Pondexter.

"I have no problem with the game," Grizzlies coach Lionel Hollins said. "We were right there. They just made a few more plays than we did down the stretch."

For the Heat, this week was filled with attention for things like pregame dunking exhibitions and their version of a "Harlem Shake" video ? which generated more than 5 million views on YouTube in about 24 hours of being posted.

Then came a basketball game, the likes of which had not been seen in the NBA for almost 20 years.

According to STATS LLC, the most recent time before Friday that there was a game between two teams that were carrying at least 12- and eight-game winning streaks was Dec. 3, 1993, when Atlanta (which had won nine straight) beat Houston (which had won 15 straight).

In fact, the Heat-Grizzlies game was just the eighth in NBA history pitting two teams with active winning streaks of at least eight in a row.

Want more significance? Spoelstra and Hollins were announced earlier in the day as the Eastern and Western Conference coaches of the month, respectively. And news came just before tipoff that James was picked yet again as the East's player of the month, making him 4 for 4 in that department this season.

"Just a residual of team success," Spoelstra said.

Added Hollins: "I'm the head coach and I get the credit and I get the blame, but those guys have been playing extremely well ... coming together with all the turmoil and all the chaos that we've had."

So of course, in a game between the NBA's two hottest teams, the start was ice cold. The teams combined to miss 23 of their first 32 shots.

And for James, things were downright frigid.

After the best shooting month of his career ? the three-time MVP made 64 percent of his shots in February, the best month of any NBA player with 200 attempts since Kareem Abdul-Jabbar shot 65 percent in March 1983 ? James' run in March started in a decidedly different manner.

James made a 3-pointer on his first attempt of the night, then missed his next eight tries.

"You won't see that happening too many times," Wade said. "It was great that on a night where he didn't have it going offensively, he had trust in his guys and didn't force up 20-odd shots. He played to pass and he still was aggressive. We'll take it. We'll take it, him getting those numbers and us getting the win."

NOTES: Battier has at least one 3-pointer in 14 straight games, the fourth-best such streak of his career. ... Miami is at New York on Sunday, facing a Knicks team that has already beaten the Heat twice ? by 20 points each time. "Our guys will look forward to playing this game," Spoelstra said.

Logitech cuts 5 percent of core staff as part of its shift to mobile

Logitech made clear in January that it was jettisoning weight in a bid to stem losses and focus on more successful technologies like mobile peripherals. Sadly, we're learning today that this also includes cutting jobs. The company is shedding 140 positions, or about 5 percent of its non-manufacturing workforce, as part of a streamlining plan that could save an extra $16 million to $18 million during Logitech's fiscal 2014. While there's no specific timeframe mentioned, it's suggested the layoffs will come quickly when the company may pay up to $14 million to address the cuts during its ongoing fourth quarter. Let's hope those affected land on their feet, and that the savings pay off in the long run.
